Each new year, the Summer Program information and schedule is generally announced sometime by early spring. This page is updated at that time.

For all workshops, a prepaid tuition is required. Early registration is recommended to assure placement of your child.

 

June Derby Series 2011
Primarily for Derby Academy students (other children may be able to attend)

 

In and Out of The Garden 
June 13 to 17, 2011 -- primarily for Derby Academy students

Students will be introduced to the basic elements of drawing through careful observation of the environment in the Magic Garden. In each session the young artists' drawings are compiled in a sketch book to help them to document their progress. Learning to identify and visually translate flowers, vegetables, trees, birds and insects is a key part of this workshop's nature theme. Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the natural world around them, while also having an opportunity to experience varied art materials to express themselves both realistically and imaginatively.

Please note: These workshops are held at Children's Creativity Workshops location in Hingham, MA -- not at Derby Academy.

Derby Academy students primarily -- Children from other schools may be able to attend. Workshop meets daily during these five consecutive days and students may register for one (1) of the following time periods:

Nature's Gifts

Using the Magic Garden's colorful bounty to inspire young artists, we will use natural materials to create collages, textile prints, sculptures and vibrant paintings. A variety of media will be explored including fabric, pressed flowers and clays.

Please note: These workshops are held at Children's Creativity Workshops location in Hingham, MA -- not at Derby Academy.

Derby Academy students primarily -- Children from other schools may be able to attend. Workshop meets daily during these five consecutive days and students may register for the following time period:

Acrylic Painting for Beginners

June 27 to July 1, 2011

Learn the basics of acrylic painting while working in the Magic Garden. The main emphasis of this workshop will be understanding the color wheel, color mixing, translating values, light and shadow towards learning the basic skills to begin a painting. A list of required supplies will be provided upon registration.

Workshop meets daily during these five consecutive days and students may register for one (1) the following time periods:

Folk Art 1: Celebrating Diverse Cultures
July 27 to August 24, 2011
Celebrate cultures from around the world, taking a visual and imaginative journey. Understand the origins of native crafts through a hands-on process, creating folk art while developing a curiosity about our world. Experience designing several of the following: spirit mask, tree of life, folk toys, animal miniatures, hand weaving and pottery. We follow a map to discover the geographic origins of these crafts.

A five-week series, meeting once every Wednesday during this time period, and students may register for one (1) of the following time periods:

Folk Art 2: The Marketplace
July 28 to August 25, 2011


Miniature-sized everyday objects are prevalent in many cultures. By sculpting and painting a tiny marketplace we will explore the daily life of a small village. We use creativity as
a catalyst to explore the arts and customs of particular cultures. A wide spectrum of artistic materials are used to portray the foods, crafts, textiles and other rich subject matter.

Prerequisite: Folk Art 1: Celebrating Diverse Cultures

A five-week series, which meets once every Thursday during this time period, and students may register for one (1) of the following time periods:

Folk Art 3: Global Traditions
July 28 to August 25, 2011
In a continuing celebration of the vibrant traditions of folk art, students will nurture their creative spirit by designing their own art. Clay, paint, and natural materials are used. Girls and boys will be inspired by Native American, Mexican and East Asian cultures. Students will be encouraged in designing their creations by viewing examples of global artistic traditions.

Prerequisite: Folk Art 2: The Marketplace

A five-week series, which meets once every Thursday during this time period, and students may register for one (1) of the following time periods:
